Late 1950's / Early 1960's Opera Coat
Vintage Late 1950's / Early 1960's Opera Coat
Crafted from a sumptuous, silk "Peau de Soie" in the most stunning shade of lemon yellow. Fabric has a beautiful, heavy drape and semi-matte lustre. Dramatic portrait collar (which can also be worn flat) is held up via a cage of hidden boning. Coat closes via a simple hook at the collar. Separate hook holds the long, dagger lapels in place. Much of the piece exhibits demi-couture and couture techniques; hand-finishing, blanket-stitch hook eyes, etc. Lining is smooth, white, synthetic satin.
Mel's Notes: The previous owner attributed the coat to Franco-American couturière Pauline Trigère, but sadly, it is unlabeled. Its sculptural silhouette definitely evokes the work of a very skilled designer.
Conditon: The coat has been professionally hemmed to remove intractable damage to its lowest portions. Otherwise, it is stunningly well-preserved, with only a few tiny, natural flaws in the silk and a faint pink mark to one of the lapels (see photos).
