1930's Sparkling Showgirl Costume | VINTAGE
Stunning and extremely rare 1930’s showgirl costume with semi-detached batwing sleeves and acid green silk chiffon ruffles. Silvery seed beads in a serpentine pattern on a sturdy, but lightweight, ivory ground. Two layers of pleated ruffles on the skirt, attached in a zig-zag pattern. Very early “Lightning” zipper at the back and “Lion” zippers at the sleeves. Leotard is fully lined in cotton. Bottom section is ivory silk cut like hot pants.
Mel’s Notes: I unfortunately don’t know the name of the original owner, but this incredible piece came from the estate of someone who was clearly a stage or film performer for quite some time, as her group of costumes dated from the early 1920’s to the late 1930’s.
Condition: Very wearable and structurally sound; discoloration that looks like make-up in strips across the mid-section, under the arms, in the crooks of the sleeves and underside of wrist. Some similar discoloration inside, especially at the edges. Some areas where the green chiffon has turned yellow (near the under arms, at the back of the neck). I have not attempted to steam the chiffon, as I didn’t want to lose the fine pleat throughout. Elastic at the leg openings is a bit brittle, but not fully stretched out - could be replaced if necessary. A few, small patches on the arms are missing their beads, but there are no loose ones - everything has been sewn down. Overall, it’s amazing this thing survived in such beautiful condition!
